Nuts and Bolts - Pyrolysis of Tyres

Burning 1 ton of waste tyres produces about 420 litres of pyrolysis oil, 150 kg of steel wire and 270 kg of carbon black. The damage to the environment is obvious. Performing pyrolysis of scrap tyres saves the environment and gives yield to 3 valuable materials.

Pyrolysis gas can be condensed recovering pyrolysis oil. The recovered oil usually has specific gravity about 0.93, a sulphur content (1.1%) as well as the residual carbon content. This oil can be further filtered prior to be used mainly as heating oil. It is a type of Light Fuel Oil or commonly named LFO. Its kinematic viscosity is 2.6 centi-Stokes (cSt) which makes it a non-viscous liquid.

If the oil is filtered through a filter press, we can expect the residual carbon in the oil to be smaller than 10 micron and therefore suitable even for packaged burner system which typically will have 0.3 mm or 300 micron nozzle diameter. Any depositing of residual carbon will be avoided.

The calorific value of the tyre oil is 43.8 MJ or 10,500 kcal per kg which is similar to that of diesel and gasoline.

Another by-product related to the scrap tyres pyrolysis is the carbon black. After separation from the steel wire, solid residual from the pyrolysis process is the carbon black usually in the powdered form. From laboratory analysis, tyre carbon black has 76% carbon, 10% ash, 3% sulphur and other metals such as magnesium, copper, iron and zinc.

The calorific value of the tyre carbon black is 26 MJ or 6,200 kcal per kg which makes it good as a solid fuel. It will require further processing from powder into briquette form to make it suitable for combustion.

The steel wire recovered from the process is usually sold as scrap steel for recycling.
  • Heat required for Pyrolysis of Tyres
For every 1 ton of tyres, the fuel needed to complete the conversion of the tyres into oil and carbon black, is about 52 litres of diesel or 2,100 MJ of heat.

The heat from the by-products will generate 16,800 MJ from combusting the oil and another 7,000 MJ from combusting the carbon ie a total heat content of 23,800 MJ. There is therefore a 11 times gain in heat by recovering heat energy from waste tyres which makes it worthwhile.

We need some information on how many tons or liters we need of LPG per one ton of tires to complete the conversion.
and how many kw we need per one ton of tires to complete the conversion.

    2. I guess you must check test results again because the flash point is actually coming out to be 47 degree celsius in my case. Although I was facing a similar problem, the solution that I found to this was that I started mixing Furnace oil with tyre oil and this shifted the flash point to desired level.

  10. Why tire oil sales in malaysia currently less behavior? Oil tank in the factory are always full, less the buyer, not like the old days?

    2. Thanks for your Trust,

You can remove 100% Bad Smell and Odour of Tyre Oil by Hydrogenation. As it is very Difficult Process requires High skill, Expensive Machinery and Hydrogen Gas Handling.
But You can partially remove upto 80% bad smell of Tyre oil along with Sulphur and Carbon.
      Generally Process as:

1- Remove All of Moisture of Tyre Oil by passing through Anhydrous Sodium Sulphate Filter Chamber

2- Very carefully made mixture of Methanol(30%) & Sulphuric Acid(70%) and cool this mixture

3- ADD 6% of this Solution to moisture free Tyre Oil and mix it well for 45 minutes, maintain temperature less then 40 degree celcius. Give this mixture Stay for Minimum 5 Hours.

4-Drain the Acid Sludge and add 2% Soda Ash and mix well for 45 min.

5-Drain Soda Ash Sludge add 1% Fuller Earth or Activated Clay and Heat upto 60 degree with continous mixing and Filter through Press or Centifuge

84-88% Yield Obtain of Brown Color, Transparent, low Sulphur , Low Carbon nearly Odorless Oil is Obtain. which can directly use in Diesel Engine with 30% mixing of Kerosen Oil or 50% mixing of pure diesel.

You can improve Further qulity of oil with Change in Pyrolysis Plant Design , Distillation and use of Mixing of Plastic Scrap etc.

  22. Dear Brother,

I have converted Tyre Pyrolysis Oil in Pure Carbon free LDO , Pure Diesel , Heavy Naptha (Aromatic Solvent) in Lab. as well as on Small Scale Pilot Plant, and succesfully Running 1 Ton/Day Pilot Plant. Planning for bulk Production Plant.

There are number of ways of refining Tyre Pyrolysis Oil, I have worked on 3 Diffrent Processes:

    1- Hydrodenation+Hydrodesulphurization (89% Yield of Pure )

    2- Distillation + Acid / Clay Treatment

    3- Acid / Base Treatment + Distillation/Clay Treatment

Hydrodesulphurization is Best Process in term of Product Quality and Yield But its complicated due to use of Hydrogen gas, Specific Catalyst & Plant Design. But other two methods are simple & Easy and give upto 78% Pure Oil Yield.

Tyre Pyrolysis Oil can be converted into Refine valueable oil upto 78% Recovery. But this project also require Proper Plant & Chemical Processes.

General Flow of Refining Tyre Oil is as:

    1 STEP: Moister Removal 96 – 98% Recovery
2 STEP: Chemical Treatment 88% Recovery
    3 STEP: Distillation 82% Recovery
4 STEP: Chemical Treatment 80% Recovery
    5 STEP: Filtration 78% Recovery

    Tyre Oil Yield as

    Naptha 30%
    &
    Diesel with 50%
But combinely this Product can 100% be use as diesel.

Pyrolytic Carbon can be refine near to Carbon Black N330 as:

    Dil.Acid Washing

    Dil.Caustic Washing

    water washing

    Drying

    Grinding upto 325 mesh

  25. The calorific value of the tyre carbon black is 26 MJ or 6,200 kcal per kg, then why we cant use it as fuel instead it is used to put of fire?
plz help in this case how tyre carbon black can be used as fuel?

  26. Carbon black is more valuable when used as an adsorbent activated carbon that way it can be regenerated and recycled unlike when burned to pollute the air it is also valuable when used as a filler, they do make fuel bricks from it but it is a small amount.

My question to the blogger is the sources of his information (scientific articles) I am a student of applications of tyre pyrolysis oil so I need as much help I can get

  31. Generally Pyrolylic Carbon Refining Process is as:

1- Remove Wire pieces from carbon powder By Sieve of 20 - 40 mesh and then Magnetic.
2- Grinding Carbon Powder to minimum 600 mesh ( if you can grind to 1000 mesh you can get superior Quality) By Mean of Ball Mill or Grinding Mill.
3- Made 30 kg Carbon Powder + 70kg Water Slurry and Add 5kg HCl+ 3Kg HNO3, Stirr All this Solution for 4 Hour minimum.
4- Filter the Acid Wash Carbon Powder with Water untill all the Acid Traces remove.
5- Dry the Wet Wash Carbon Powder by mean of Spry Dryer or Drum Dryer.
6- Coat the Dry Carbon Powder with 1% Strearic Acid to Improve Quality of Carbon Powder.

At the End You will get 70 % Yield of Refine Carbon Black Pigment.

I Hope this Information would guide you to Start this Project.
